Using the "If" function in an Excel formula

How can I distinguish between a blank cell and cell with zero value in it when writing an "If" formula. 0 and "" have exactly the same effect.

You need to use nested if statements -- the first to determine if it's a blank or a zero (as suggested by Number 7) and the second to do whatever you want with the content:

=IF(ISBLANK(A1),"",=IF(A1=0,do something,do something else))

Correction, you don't need the second = sign.
