using brackets in excel

Are there any excel buffs out there who would know how to use brackets eg (12) to symbolise a minus figure when doing your accounts rather than using eg -12. Excel doesn't seem to recognise brackets???

Go to format/custom and put the following in by amending one of the default settings:-

£#,##0;£(#,##0)

I removed the RED and the minus sign.

It works on mine.
