USB.ini File missing or damaged in XP Pro

I have found out that problem with all my USB ports being AWOL on a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI is possibly due to the USB.ini file being missing or damaged.

Is this fixable ?

I don't have a USB.ini file in XP Pro. Is it perhaps the USB.INF file, which would be used by Windows to reinstall the USB Hubs & Devices?

This should be in C:\Windows\inf\usb.inf

The "inf" folder is a hidden folder so Windows Explorer needs to be set to "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

is there a way to get it back. Just going to search to see if its actually there.

usb and several others with usb in the name. I tried sfc/scannow which didn't help installing USB ports back.

It sounds as though you have Windows Explorer set to hide the extensions of known file types, so you're not seeing the .INF extension.

The file is about 21kB and possibly dated 23/08/01.

but dates from 2006 to 2008 not 2001

I tried sfc/scannow

should be
sfc /scannow

there are 14 USB files including USB.in_ which is a compressed version of USB.inf located in the I386 folder either on your hard drive or windows CD

it is the ini file dated 28 Feb 06

my USB.inf is located in the Windows Inf Folder not I386 folder. Where is the I386 folder located ?

  mgmcc 08:54 31 Aug 2010

The i386 folder contains the (compressed) installation files for Windows XP. It is on the CD and there is *SOMETIMES* a copy of it on the hard drive after installing, but this is not always the case. I don't have the i386 folder in my hard drive.

However, if you have the USB.INF file in the C:\Windows\inf\ folder, then the problem isn't with the file being missing. What is shown in Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"?

On My Nvidia - NForce4 chipset motherboard under USB I have the following 2 items with Yellow Exclamation marks
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host controller
