USB2 ext hub going slow with Ext Hard Drive

2 days ago I bought a Western Digital My Book external hard drive and discovered that my pc (mesh matrix 1400- nearly 6 years old) only has USB1 so I bought a USB2 hub to give me the required speed. However, there is no difference in speed. I looked in the device manager and the extension hub is note recognised as an enhanced hub, it's only listed as a generic 4 port hub. What can I do to get this to work? everything is so slow, when I tried to transfer a 6 gb folder to the external drive I was unable to access any features on the pc, after a couple of minutes of struggling to copy the files the pc froze and I had to restart. Not good, obviously..

you need to change the usb 1 to usb 2,just by connecting a usb 2 hub will not convert it to usb 2.0

When you say you bought a USB 2 hub do you mean a card to fit in a PCI slot or a hub that plugs into an existing USB port. A USB 2 hub will only work at USB 1.1 speed in a USB 1.1 port.
