USB Query

I have a motherboad on a PC that is about five years old with two USB slots. I want to add some more so am thinking of adding a four slot usb PCI card. I expect all the current pCI/Usb are USB 2 and that the mboard is USB 1. Will the additional card work OK. My feeling is that it will work at USB 1 speed but I would like to know.

If you buy a PCI USB 2.0 card it will run at USB 2.0 speeds.

Not necessarily, if it is as milkybarkid is saying attached to a USB 1.1 mobo then it is backward compatable and will run at USB 1.1 speeds, not USB2.0 speeds, but all will work fine. My old comp had the same installed, but two not four added by PCI slot.

A USB 2.0 PCI card will be totally independent of the USB 1.1 of the motherboard because it has its own controller although it could be limited by the speed of the PCI bus. Avoid the ones that use the VIA chipset as I have had problems with these but ALI and NEC are fine.

Eric10 & Totally-braindead are correct here, just in case you are confused.

Thanks good people. Will look for the suggested chipsets.
