USB Ports - Power

  Press Man 22:46 19 Nov 2007

Hi Guys,

Are usb ports constantly "powered" even when the pc is "off" (not switched off at mains or PSU switch). Reason for asking is, if I plug in a usb external HDD with its own power supply, it starts up? I would have expected it to start up when the pc was started? This means that the external HDD will always be on? Any suggestions welcome. Mobo is Asus MN2-E, XPsp2.

Yes modern board have power running through them when PC is powered down but not off at mains.

This is why you should alwys unplug before changing PCI cards memory etc.

Sometimes this causes problems when trying to boot with an external USB device plugged in.

So there is no way the external hdd will turn off then, will always have to turn hdd off at mains. Not very convienient to have to do this, are there any other options/configurations for the usb ports?

Not all USB ports are powered when PC is shut down.Check other ports on your computer to see if you can find one that is not.

There is a 6,7 or 8 gang socket , that turns off all periferals when pc is shut down.

But I can't remember who makes then, Belkin comes to mind.

All four rear ports are powered when the pc is shut down. If I fitted a pci usb card would they be constantly powered? Is there any other way to not have the rear ports powered?
