USB ports dropping out??

I have a Gigabyte GA7-DX400 Pro motherboard, and am noticing that the USB ports seem to drop out occasionally. If I have left the speakers on, I sometimes get a couple of chimes (the sound when a new USB device is connected/disconnected) - which seem to be the port dropping out and back in again.

Is this a known problem and is there anything I can do about it?

It only seems to be the 4 ports on the back of the PC that are affected. I attached a powered USB hub to one of the rear ports, and when using my USB joystick I get it disconnecting in the middle of a game, yet I get no problem when I use the front port. My modem is plugged into the back, and has been having connection problems and I wondered if this was related.
