USB - IDE problem

AMD 2400+ 2Ghz
Win XP pro
I have a USB IDE convertor to which I have attached a HDD.When plugged in receive a message that new hardware found. The disk is correctly identified and the message tells me that it is installed and ready to use.
On opening windows explorer the disk is nowhere to be seen and stops the boot sequence completing.
Device manager identifes a USB Mass storage device which is working. Any ideas as to what is wrong please?

Is the drive new?

HAs it been formatted?

right click My computer select Manage- storage - disk management
you should be able to see the drive and format it as required.

Techno tiger: Yes to the first part and no to the second.

Fruitbat: It hasn't been formatted and disk managment can't see it either.

Thanks to both of you.

Any further ideas?
Should I replace one of my internal drives with the new one to format it or will this make no difference?
