USB Hub power

I have a 4 port USB 2.0 hub which has functioned well for many months. During that time, I have frequently connected and disconnected a web cam. When I plug the camera in now, I get an error message telling me that there is not enough power available through the hub to power it. Any reason why this has worked well in the past, but is causing a problem now?(nothing else has been connected/disconnected to the hub)

It was probably always right on the borderline between enough power and not enough power. In such cases the smallest change in components either in the PC or the camera can cause it to slip to the wrong side of the borderline. Components (particularly those connected with power handling) do change slightly with age, and my guess is that that's all that's happened.

PS - it could even be a change in one of the other devices attached to the hub - drawing a smidge more power, leaving not quite so much for the camera.

Thanks DieSse

Of course another possibility is that the camera has developed a fault. Will it work when connected directly to a basic USB port, not via a hub?

It works OK on one of the basic USB ports so I suspect that, as you have said, the problem is a genuine loading one. Many thanks for your input
