USB Flash Drive Problem in Win XP

  Rogmur 18:37 23 Dec 2006

Greeting to all Forum Members.

I have recently bought two USB Flash Drives.
Normally when I install any USB Flash Drive
Win XP recognises the drives straight away.

However, when I plugged in my new USB Flash drive (it is also USB2) I receive the Windows Hardware Wizard, which is most annoying.

In order to get rid of the hardware wizard I click
on "Yes" and let the wizard go through its process.

Then I receive the meassage;

"Cannot Install this Hardware"

The Hardware was not installed because the wizard
cannot find the necessary software.

What on earth is wrong? is it a defective USB Drive, or defective USB port??

I would be very grateful for any advice.

And a Merry Christmas and wonderful (PC trouble-free) New Year to you all.

Kind regards

Hi, have you tried them both in that same 'suspect' port. Though I would suspect you have a dodgy USB Drive.

Also, have you tried the drives in different USB ports?

can you see the drive in explorer? if so, format it. You must always stop these usb devices before removal. Good luck.

Hi everyone

Many thanks to you all for your help.

The USB Devices in question throw up the
Windows "Found New Hardware Wizard".

This is the problem as it is searching for a device driver which the USB device does not need.

I have also just tried to use a Sat Nav device (USB)but this is also effected by the Hardware Wizard/Driver problem.

Kind regards
