The next available drive letter on my system is G. Until recently this was always allocated to my USB HDD, thumb drive etc. when plugged in, as it should be. The system now increases the letter by 1 after removal of a device & insertion of a different one. So each time I do this I get successively H, I, J, K etc. The letters before that currently allocated do not show in Computer Management / Disc Management, although there are no other devices installed. After a reboot, the letter allocation starts where it previously left off, except that the letters before it are now showing & selectable in Disc Management. Using different USB ports has no effect. I'm running XP Home SP2, fully patched, no viruses or other nasties. Please help! This problem messes up my batch files for backup to external drives.
