USB connectivity

I'm trying to use a 40gb External HDD with my PC which is on ME.Although it shows as installed and working properly in device manager,there is no icon showing in "My Computer".If I try it on my laptop (XP) it shows as Local Disk "E".I have the same problem with a scanner and printer etc.Memory sticks/digital cameras etc. are fine thru' the USB but not the big boys.Printer is currently via the parallel port.Am I looking at installing XP or is there a way round it.The ME system is excellent on this PC and I am reluctant to change it even tho' I am informed it will cope easily with XP.I have tried removing all device's in safe mode and then letting Windows re-install.In "find device by connection", it shows all the devices as installed.Any advice greatly appreciated. ...a driver to work with ME. What make of disk is it? Have you looked on the makers' web site for advice?

OR...could this be one of those USB 1.1 port not seeing a USB 2 device problems?

I would ask the makers about this.

Does the ME pc have USB2? I wouldn't entertain running an external HDD via usb1.1.
