You can charge them off the mains power anyway, cant you?

Try this...
Open Device Manager (Win 7 Control Panel/Hardware & Sound/Devices & Sound/Device Manager is one way of getting it)
Click the + at Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Right-click USB Root Hub and select Properties.
Open the Power Management tab.
Clear the checkmark from Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Click OK.
Repeat this procedure for the USB 2.0 Hub.

No

If you buy a mains charger as mentioned you wont have to cart around a PC in order to charge your Ipod/phone. You can pick one up online for little more than the price of a pint.
