Since an IDE drive requires a 40 or 80 connection plug how does it manage to work fron a USB connection with only 5 connections

IDE 40/80 pin cables are parallel connections, USB is serial - the bits travel one at a time. Only two of the connections are used for data, two for power. 4 connectors.

open the caddy, which I had cause to do recently - knacked external drive, u wud see that the drive is just a normal IDE HDD, which slides onto a 40 or 80 connector block.

I'm assuming the 5 connectors u are referring to are the 4 pin power lead, and the usb lead?

Sorry should have been 4 connectors I was considering the metal of the connnector as an earth. I realise that it still plugs into a normal IDE plug. From Brundles reply I suppose there must be something in the electronics of the card to convert from parallel to series et Vice versa. Thanks both
