Please advice as to which is the better product for an external hard drive

are very fast standards, it is personal choice.

USB 2.0 supports speeds of 480Mbps I think,
And Firewire is more or less the same.


I use USB 2.0 and seams to be Ok. It's up to you.

There's not much between them. Although the max data transfer rate of USB2 is 480Mbps and firewire is 400Mbps, firewire devices quite often perform faster than USB2. But firewire is supposed to be more expensive to produce, so check the prices. Also, on the PC platform now, it's more common to have built-in USB2 support than firewire. If you need to take your external hdd to be used on other computers, USB2 might be better. If not I'd go for firewire.
