USB 2 Hi-Speed mains

  geedad 12:51 10 Mar 2007

I am still having problems with my external devices when trying to use them I get a comment stating that .. this device will work faster if connected to a Hi-Speed USB 2 port....
Can I attach an external MAINS POWERED port to the PC and plug in the devices to achieve the higher speed?

If your computer has USB1 rather than the USB2 version, then a powered hub won't help.

However some USB2 sockets, are only recognised after installing special drivers.

check your computer spec.

My PC is a Sony PCV-RS404 and has 6 USB 2 sockets for external devices. 2 Front 4 Rear, as shown on the original manual.
An ecternal hard drive, a photo printer and an additional DVD writer all report the need for a faster connection.

In device manager check you hae an "Enhanced " driver under the heading USB

Go to google and enter IDE USB PORT, this will bring up a selection of IDE cards for USB2 connections.
The prices are around £14.

What is the operating system?

You can also find out about obtaining USB2 drivers from:

Thanks, both!
Will have a look at these suggestions.
I will come back to you all if the problem is solved.

If you are using XP the ports should work as USB2. You may need to load Motherboard Drivers

If you have XP and SP2 then the USB drivers will be available in any case.

What is the operating system?

Sorry, Stuartli,
I should have told you my OS was XP (Home). SP2.
I do have USB drivers installed but NOT ENHANCED, apparently. I plug the external devices directly to the PC, and not through the external hub.These are also powered devices.
I get a comment everytime I attempt to use my external devices "This devices will work faster when connected to a HI-SPEED USB2 port" ...
Members must be fed up with me when I constantly post the same problem!
Thank you for your suggestion about the Motherboard drive.
I have just looked at "System Information" on my PC and one line under "system drivers" shows the following:
Name= usbehci
Description= Microsoft USB2 Enhanced Host Controller Miniport driver.
File= c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbehci.sys
Started= No
Start Mode= Manual
State= Running.
Is all of this pertinent to the problem?
