When I click on to a hyperlink on an on-line web page I get the message "The Requested URL could not be retrieved" with the added message "The dnsserver returned Timeout" and "This means that the cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL"

Can anyone enlighten me as to the possible cause?

Is this on a particular web page or any website?

It basically means that it cannot find the web page. When you click on a page link, the internet does notunderstand www.... it has to be translated into an IP address with the format 111.222.333.444

This is done by a Domaine Name Server (DNS), the address of which is given to you by your ISP.

The "timeout" message probably means that your DNS is very busy and the "cache" message means that it isn't in its mamory.

What it is really saying is: "Go away, I'm busy. Come back later!"
