Every time I go on the Internet befor I start to surf my broad band conection reports that I am transmiting anything up to 288 kbps and recently norton is scaning returned E-Mail that has not been accepted by an isp for various reasons, non of which I have sent. Is this the work of someone using my conection to spread spam or virus if so what can I do.

Could also be programs looking for automatic updates such as windows /norton adaware etc.

If so this should stop internet activity after a couple of minutes.

Have a look at what is in the startup folder type msconfig in run box.
