Upgrading RAM

  simon_lambert 21:37 09 May 2007

If I want to upgrade my RAM on a old machine from 256 to 1gb, what would I need to consider? Are there special types I need to buy, or compatibility issues? Thanks

Does your motherboard support such an upgrade? Can you still get the memory at a reasonable price? Let us know the make and model of the PC or the motherboard.

How can I find this out? I dont have any documentation for the PC?

When you say old, how old, the first thing to consider is it worth it,

If this PC has internet access go to link and follow
links for "memory upgrades" it will tell you exactly what memory you have in and what you can upgrade to...

Cheers I will try that. It is quite a new machine but quite a low-spec one.

Run a scan with SIW. click here it should tell you the name of the motherboard, Or if the old computer has internet access, go to click here and run a scan with The Crucial System Scanner.

If you can get hold of the motherboard manual it should give you recommended DIMM configurations for optimum max speeds.
