I'm going to upgrade my mother board and processor, currently run windows XP home.
I presume that I will need to reinstall windows from scratch?
I have a full current back up both of files and folders and also a full drive back up on an external HD by acronis true home 11.
question is whats the best way to do the reinstall?

install windows from scratch and then restore from the full drive back up or reinstall all software then restore files and folders?

It does not need to be the quickest or easiest way to do it just the best way to give me stable safe result.

Thanks

Your assumption is correct with regard reinstall XP
The O/S sees new MoBo and assumes new computer- MS will need to re validate it.
From then on normal transfer of data.
What about programs?
Does Acronis hold a complete back up?
From my experience with attempts to transfer programs- it does not work - because, seemingly vital elements in the registry of the deleted O/S have gone too - so a re install from disk for programs is the only way - or has been so for me.

Thanks jack
Yes Acronis holds a complete back up, full disk images are stored, but I did not know if they will work or if a clean reinstall of everything would be the best way.

Another question, would it make any difference if I add a new HD and just reinstall windows on that?
I'm guessing it may not work? but can anyone tell me?
