Upgrading Hard Drive

I'm contemplating replacing the 30gb hard drive with a 120gb one on a spare Toshiba laptop. I've the Toshiba boot disk etc but was wondering it it's better/easier to just load a new version of XP and still use the original activation codes.

You could backup the old drive with something like Acronis True Image and load the whole content onto the new drive on installation. Or, if you have the resources, clone the old drive to the new. If you load a new copy of XP you may have problems with some of the Toshiba discrete drivers.

As above, fit the new drive after you have made a Image of the old one with True Image and load it to the new one. If you geta a USB caddy for the new drive you can load the image onto that. then fit it in laptop boot with acronis rescue disc and restore the Image on the new Hard Drive

You can then use the Caddy with old drive for backup

Is it possible to use Acronis True Image to load the cintents of the old drive onto the new drive wist it's in a caddy?
Of course the only problem with going down this path, is, all the old crud is also copied.
