Upgrading firmware info

I am using a Netgear DG834PN router which had the original firmware installed for it, but as you might be aware i am having a lot of problems with dropped connections, so on the advice of my ISP i upgraded to the latest firmware version and the speed of my internet is now flying at 6.8mbps and so far no dropped connections, can this be what was causing the problem all along or is it just wishful thinging on my part.

It could be due to the firmware but the fixes mentioned in the latest firmware don't mention upgrades to the modem side of the router.

I have a DG834N, the next one up and I use a custom firmware which gives me a much better connection speed than with the Netgear firmware it was shipped with. It's trial and error really.
There is a version for the PN, if you're interested it's here click here= However, if yours is working OK it may be best to leave it.
