I am thinking of upgrading to Win XP home using an upgrade cd. I know I must have Win98 installed to do this. My question is:- is it best to format and do a clean install of 98 before upgading rather than upgrading my existing installation?

Your best bet would be to format and do a clean install with X\P. It will probably just ask for you to insert the 98 disk.

Install XP over 98 and during the installation it will ask you if you warn to do a clean install click yes. It is on the wizard where it says recommended install click the downward arrow and change it from Recommended to Full Installation.. However I would recommend that you install over 98 to ensure that your computer is XP compatible and if all is not okay you have the opportunity to revert back. If all is ok then re boot with the XP cd in the rom and boot from the CD and do a full clean installation using the NTFS file system..
