upgrades - motherboard or processor?

  bythor 20:48 25 Feb 2004

i've been reading the article in issue 105 of the magazine about upgrading. Hitting blank walls whe it comes to finding out about my processor. Intel site just reminds me that my CPU is no longer supported! Can anyone offer advice on the pros and cons of processor or motherboard upgrade?
My existing setup: (win98)
Motherboard: Tolstoy
CPU: Pentium 2 (socket 1)
Speed: 400MHz
Front side bus: 100MHz
Cache Ram: 512KB

I'm just looking into simply upgrading the CPU if it's possible (and relatively cheap!! :-)

you need to check your Case is ATX. To check look inside at the main cable loom from the PSU to the Motherboard if it as one plug with lots of wires its a ATX if its two plugs side by side then its a AT case so you are looking at a Case from £10 up to what you can afford, I also think you would need at least a 256DDR memory strip to suit the Motherboard

You will have extremely limited options in upgrading this processor and any difference will be extremely negligible. An upgrade to the amount of RAM would be a better bet.

To make a real difference you would need to change the motherboard, CPU, RAM and Power Supply Unit as a minimum.

thanks bremner. I've already got 256 of ram in it. Just added a bigger hdd and reinstalled win98. It's all working fine for now so maybe I'll' just leave well enoug alone. For now...
Thanks everyone for input. I'll close it as resolved but feel free if any of you want to add.
