upgrade W98 to W2000 - PANIC?

  concise 14:40 26 Feb 2005

Approx 6 hrs ago I started upgrade. For several hours it seems to be caught in a loop after it got to:-
"Performing Final Tasks"
Install Start Menu Items (Ticked)
Registers Components (Ticked)
Upgrade Program and System Settings (Arrowed)
Windows 2000 Set Up
"Please wait . . ."
Followed by screens:-
Installing Devices
Network Settings
Installing Components
Whereupon it returns to:-
"Performing Final Tasks" And so it goes.
I am afraid to turn the D*** thing off.
Any advice gratefully received. If someone refers me to a "helpful" website could they indicate where to look on it as somesites are quite labrynthine. Ta.

Sounds like a hardware detection problem...

I presume you have a good backup - in which case, time to shutdown, boot with Win2k CD and format disk. Then start again the procedure from fresh.

Switch off, start again.

Install as upgrade option or if asked to pick folder to instal to, select windows not (windows001)or you may find more than one opsystem gets installed.

Thanks for useful advice. I went the re-format - start again route. then forget to back up my address book and favo(u)rites, ah well. However all working but seems slower than 98 or am I just kidding myself that the old friends are the best?
Thanks again.
