Upgrade or not?

I want to be able to run the latest games (eg Unreal 2 The Awakening) at max resolution/graphics settings. I have a Compaq Presario series 5000 (model 5446EA) and to run the above game, I have to turn down all the graphics settings to the lowest (and I still get slow down).

If I upgrade the PC to 512mb plus a better graphics card (say the Rad 9700 pro)will this work? Can the Compaq take the 9700? Will a lower spec graphics card work well? Will I have to upgrade anything else to cope (eg., a etter cooling system or bigger CPU)?

I don't want to shell out a few hundred quid to upgrade and find it still won't work sufficiently.

My only other option is to buy a new PC, but I'd prefer the cheaper option if it's going to work.
