Upgrade mobo or not ?

The catalogue I ordered from Novatech came the other day, and I've been amazed at its content, from pcs to mobo's to graphics cards and the like, but it's made me come to the conclusion that there is more I can do to my current setup.

Currently I have,
Pentium 4 2.533Ghz
Geforce 4MX440
512Mb ram
80Gig Hd
Added Creative sound card
Xp

Despite what I thought was a good spec, the pc locks up, is really slow, at times, and is useless on alot of games, and it would stand little chance of running the very latest games.
Another thing that I now know is the fact that its a socket 478, which was, according to a website I was browsing, "used on older Pentiums and Celeron processors"
What I would like to know is would this "socket 478" control what I can do to my setup, or would I be better off striping the whole case and basically starting again. If the latter, what do I need to know about compatibility issues, and lastly, where on earth do I start ?

Thanks again...

What is the make/model of the motherboard?

Gigabyte GA-8SIML
(Columbia II), I think Packard Bell know it as.

How much do you wish to spent on upgrading?

I really don't know, can you give me some ideas to get a better spec.

Or, another question is, how much would I need to spend to improve the system ?

What do you use your system for, e.g. gaming, general use.

There are several options that you could take

1. Get more RAM, and increase it too 1gb perhaps, and get a new graphics card.

2. Get a new mobo, CPU, RAM pack from novatech and use old things such as hard drive from you old system, ad a new graphics card needed.

The second option is the more expensive, but will more likely be the better system.

Would just an increase in ram and a new graphics card make a difference?
Ram I know can go upto 1Gb, but then what type of graphics card could I buy,and how do I know what type of fitting it is. (Is that the PCI slot thingy) ? I've got two pci slots free.
