Upgrade help

I need some advice on how to upgarde my processor. I currently have a very old desktop which is running on an AMD Athlon xp1800+ with 1.53GHz of processing power (pathetic by modern standards I know). I would like to upgrade the a more powerful processor 2GHz plus and was wondering what I should be looking for in terms of compatability issues etc. I have already upgraded my ram to 1.25gb (again not a lot in modern terms). I am quite new to this upgrading game so please be gentle with me. Any help will be appreciated.

Its not just a case of upgrading the processor. If your system is before windows XP, I would sugest getting a new computer. Upgrading the ram is ok to help make the system run smoother. The processor is diferent. You have to take into account the motherboard also.
If you can afford it I would bite the bullit and buy a new system. Sorry I cannot be more help to you.
Happy new year.
