Upgrade from Athlon 2200+ to 2600+, worthwhile?

I have an MSI KM2M Combo motherboard (socket A). The manual says it will support up to Athlon XP 2600+, also that it has FSB 200/266. I currently have an Athlon 2200+

I was thinking about upgrading to a 2600+. The ones I've seen for sale are the Barton based or Thoroughbred based, both with FSB 333 and both about £60.00

Will I see any difference between the 2200+ and 2600+, or will the low FSB speed hold back any possible advantage. The machine is used mostly for number-crunching and image editing.

Hi Christopher Lewis. My opinion is that you are unlikely to notice a significant improvement unless you can increase the processor speed by 50%. Depending on how much RAM you have, it might be worth spending some money in that direction instead, especially for image editing.

I upgraded from 1500+ to 2400+ a few months back. 2400 was the limit for my motherboard and required updated BIOS. I did notice a difference but it was not dramatic.

The machine I built for my Father about a year ago has a 2500+ Barton and 333FSB but feels very much the same as mine with 2400+ and 266FSB.

I doubt you would see much for your £60, although there is a good market for older AMD processors on e.bay which could reduce the overall cost.

18.2% is the maximum you can get, this is not a sound technical estimation, but it is an good indication

make sure you get Thoroughbred, not barton because barton use FSB 333 which you motherboard does not support. I really doubt you can get 2600 Thoroughbred anywhere

other than benchmarks you won't notice the difference.

upgrading memory or adding more might be a better use of £60

Thanks, I thought that was probably the case
