Why does it need updating, if you cannot connect to the internet?

do you want to connect to the internet with this computer?

Werzal - you say that you've tried to connect this computer to the internet using your BB connection, but it won't recognise the modem. Did you install the modem drivers on it first?
If this is an old computer and your BB modem is USB, are you sure that the computer is successfully supporting USB? Obviously it's got USB socket(s) otherwise you wouldn't have been able to plug in the modem, but have you looked in the Device Manager to make sure that the USB controllers, etc. are working?

Why does he need to get Windows service packs installed?
