unwated 'item' on Desktop ..how to remove it?

  p;3 20:29 09 Jul 2009

On a Windows 98\SE computer; this 'item' has appeared on my Desktop;

I was working on composing a reply on a forum using the 'link' icon on the post a reply sectrion to link to another site , when I had to log off quickly; SOMEHOW I have managed to 'transfer' this object to my Desktop; it will not move, it will not shrink,

I have booted in safe mode but it is still there; it is the last thing to 'vanish' when I power down; I guess it is not 'serious' but woudl be nice to know how I might get rid of it

anyone any clues for me to try ?

rightclick on it and choose 'Properties' that might shed some light
Maybe it is a 'read only' or something?
Perhaps it has become part of Desktop Wallpaper?

Drag it into Waste Bin, its only a shortcut. also go to Start\Run type msconfig, go to setup tab look for the offending item and remove the tick from the box to stop it starting

If you have not started the computer more than five times since it appeared. when shutting down choose Shutdown to DOS then at the Prompt type

SCANREG/RESTORE choose a date to restore the Registry to before it appeared

Must be a space before the slash in scanreg /restore

Apologies for double posting

It does not matter. it still works. it's not like running SFC /SCANNOW in XP.

We are talking Win98 in DOS

Yes, I'm talking Win98 as well

I've always used the directions from Microsoft who always show the space, so I've now learnt that it works both ways

Thanks for the replies; I am trialing with changing my Desktop background to 'none'

so far the offending item has not appeared...or has ,more appropriately, disappeared ...
