Unwanted startup programs.

I know I'm thick but can anyone tell me how to get rid of unwanted programs that start up automatically on the task bar by the clock.
There are some I do want like anti-virus and messenger but some I don't like callenders and quick time.
I don't want to uninstall them or take them off the desktop just off autostart and off the taskbar to speed things up at start-up. It will also avoid having to left clik and exit them as some of them slow the computer significantly and it seems to take ages to get them off after waiting for them to start up.
Thanks Dan

Click on Start - Run - type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab and untick the ones you don't want.
