Unusual problem

Has a strange one today. My son's machine suddenly could not connect to the internet, for no apparent reason. Then I noticed that it was still connected via an old switch we used to use to bridge between the downstairs machines and upstairs - which is no longer strictly required, so I removed it and plugged in directly.

At that point I got the dreaded "a network cable has been unplugged" jobby and traced the problem to a cable - which had been gnawed through completely by rodents, including a small hole in the floorboard and the carpet. Well, it is a 200 year old property and some of the boards aren't great.

Not often that the solution for a network problem is a metal plate and rat poison.....

I had the same problem with my boys gerbils escaping, they love ethernet cables...
