UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME - Windows XP won't start

Hi,

PC switched itself off and now will not re-start windows. Gets as far as the windows XP logo but then switches off and starts the boot process again.

Just before it failed there was an error message saying 'process or thread unexpectedly exited or has been terminated, restart your computer' the file it was referring to was windowsroot/system32/ntoskrn

Won't let me start in safe mode either but i disabled the auto re-boot option and get the blue screen with a message stating:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

The technical Info is 0x000000ed (0x86f42bf0, 0xc0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I ran chkdsk /r using my windows disc but it has not resolved it.

Does anyone have any idea how to deal with this ?

Many Thanks

I had this and it turned out to be a memory problem.

Thanks - tried the chkdsk /r option but no change.

What exactly does fixboot do / is there any risk of damage to my data ?

Failing that i'll try rawprawns suggestion

You need to start with XP disc at Command Prompt type
FIX /MBR
