unmountable boot volume

hi all got the above problem ive read that you can repair this with the recovery disc which i have my problem is the laptop is a mini dell 10v running windows xp i have got an external cd rom drive but cant get the laptop to boot from the cd rom drive by using the boot menu options ,so i can use the recovery disc am i doing something wrong

"recovery disc"?

you need a full XP disk to get to Recovery Console

keep tapping ESc as you switch on it shou to set USB as first boot device.
The CD in the drive needs to be bootable.

hi fruit bat thanks for your reply managed to get into recovery console and repaired boot sector laptop now back working only prob is lost all files my docs my music my pics etc:any why to recover these or are they lost forever

I would also run a full disk check on your hard drive and see if there are any bad sectors on your drive. If there are, I would look at getting a new drive.
Do this AFTER you've run Recuva though otherwise it will be even harder to recover the stuff you've deleted.

thanks fruit bat for your input, used recuva got quite a lot of the files and pics back going to tick resolved
