unmountable boot volume

  Ozy 22:24 27 Feb 2008

XP Pro I built has been working fine, this morning I switched on and got .
Unmountable boot volume, insert system disk and press enter.
Doing that without system disc does nothing, just reboots to the error.
With the system disc in it starts to load windows setup,
I am going to try that tomorrow, but!
I would like to know the probable cause

hi ozy....
bios is not able to detect the hard drive ....
possible the drive has died ,or the boot sector has been corrupted .
things to check :first check cable connections ,then enter the bios and see if the hard drive is showing correctly .
if the drive shows in the bios then the boot sector is corrupted ,if not then the drive is dead .
if its the boot sector ,this can be repaired .
let us know when you find out for more advice.

The master boot record,MBR, has been corrupted.
This tells the computer what operating system to use when it starts up.
You need to reset this.
Boot from your XP disc and when given the option select Recovery console.
At the question regarding which drive/installation to repair type 1 then ENTER
At the prompt (a flashing cursor or >) enter fixmbr Press ENTER.
After that you will see the > or cursor again
enter fixboot and press ENTER.
then close by typing exit and ENTER

If you have a XP CD you could start with CD, if you can get to a Command Prompt. Like the Drive letter of the CD type

Fix /MBR press enter
