unable to start computer

Help. My grandson is staying and his laptop will not start. We can't access the start page to run sfc /scannow. The only page is one with = Safe Mode = Safe Mode with Networking, = Safe Mode with Command Prompt. = Last Good configuration, = Start Windows Normally.
No matter what we do it always ends up at the same page. He doesn't have his Win XP disc with him. Any help appreciated.

does his laptop have a floppy? if so make a start up disk and with luck you can get to run system restore.

download the boot disks or an .iso to burn a bootable CD from click here

or boot from your XP CD
to the recovery consul

at the c: prompt type windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

wait untill a system restore window appears with a Welcome note. Then follow the onscreen message and click the appropriate button.
