My AVG scan hass picked up a trojan - however i have been unable to delete the infection as it's size is too big! - it did say it has moved it to the vault...

delete it from the vault, scan again, see if all is clear.

If it is in the virus vault maybe keep it there for a week in case its another False positive from AVG.Then maybe remove it.

1--If your system is running OK,go to system restore and restore to an earlier time before it was infected.

2-- Remove all restore points to stop the trogan hiding and re-infecting your machine.

3--If you have a XP CD, put the CD in the drive - let it show the splash screen then select EXIT.
In the run box enter 'sfc /scannow' without the speech marks. This may clear your system.
Download a2free from EMSI software, that will normally remove most trogans/viruses.
God Luck
