Unable to install XP over 98. NTLDR missing.

I have just been trying to upgrade a Win98 PC (500MHz 128Mb ~12Gb) to WinXP Home using the upgrade package.

The installation process starts OK, but at the point where the computer first restarts itself, the computer will only get a very short way through the bootup and stops, displaying 'NTLDR missing'.

I checked click here and have run the sys command successfully. However this does not solve the problem and when attempting again to install XP, the system always displays NTLDR missing at the same point and goes no further.

Help!

Why don't you do a clean install (providing you have the 98 cd), then you can use NTFS much more robust file system.
