Unable to insert images into MS WordPad 5.1

I have been asked why a friend is unable to insert images into documents in MS WordPad 5.1.

I have attempted to insert object (create from file) or copy and paste images from My Pictures but this produces filename.jpg surrounded by a box?

Thanks for your response.

Tick the box labelled Link.

Thanks but I tried that - same result!

Strange. I tried it and it worked for me, inserting an existing picture.

To embed or link an object into WordPad

On the Insert menu, click Object.

Click Create from File, and then type or browse to the path and file name in File.

To embed or link the object, do one of the following:

To embed the object, make sure the Link check box is cleared.
To link the object, select the Link check box.

You can also embed or link an object from another document using Copy and Paste or Copy and Paste Special, respectively.

To create a new object, click Create New, and then click an object type. When you are finished creating the object, click outside the object to return to WordPad.

I have looked at help and tried all the suggestions - no success!

I'm still using the (original?)5.00.1691.1 version that came with Windows 98SE.

I have no problems with Copy and Paste, but the images muust be Opened first; otherwise if I Copy just the image icon I get imagename.gif (or JPEG)

But have you noticed that images so inserted greatly increase the overall size of WordPad when compared to the sum of the individual files (see separate post on this).
