Two Primary Drives

  dean_e_boy 22:16 28 Jul 2005

I have just purchased SuSe Linux, and rather than partioning my hard drive to run both windows and linux, is it possible to have two hard drives, one with Linux installed and one with windows installed, and then when I turn on my PC I have the option of what operating system I wish to use. I have a feeling that this is not possible, but any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

It is possible but you will still have to dual boot the computer, and choose what operating system you want to run.

How do I dual boot the computer and would the jumpers both be set to Primary?

No both drives do not need to be set as Master. But you can have one Primary Partition on each drive. The drives would be better on the same cable Ribbon, Master on the end of the Ribbon and Slave on the Middle connector. Leaving IDE2 for CD DVD drives

XP as a Dual boot feature in it, although I have not used it.

If you load Suse on the second drive it set's up dual boot for you

"would the jumpers both be set to Primary?"

Jumpers can be set to Master - or Slave - or Cable Select.

The two IDE cables are Primary and Secondary

Just to get the terminology correct.

The jumpers on the drives have nothing to do with what you want - they are purely so that the system can tell which drive is which.

Most modern BIOS have an option to decide which hard drive to boot from - you could experiment with that. Also you could disable one drive or the other in the BIOS to help.

My personal method is to have drives in removeable caddies - then I can simply plug in my WinXP drive, or my Linux (Linspire) drive.

However, I now also have Linux (Xandros) on my XP drive with dual booting (which Xandros installed automaticcally and flawlessly. This means my Xandros has access to the data on the XP drive - which can be an advantage.

Shortly I will be deciding which Linux to keep and which to ditch!
