two drives/two antivirus products?

I have two drives the second of which is used as backup and storage but has its own os and can be booted from if the main drive fails.I have norton on the main drive, is it a problem if I use say AVG and Zone Alarm on the other?

No as they won't be running at the sametime.

You can have as many anti virus programs as you like BUT you cannot have 2 running at the same time as Powerless has said, if you do they can conflict and stop either of them from working properly.
As long as the second anti virus program is not set to run on your main drive at the same time as the other anti virus program you will be ok.
But because of the confusion that you can have its generally not advised to have more than one anti virus program.
I've never tried having 2 anti virus programs at the same time mainly because I'm fairly sure I'd screw things up somehow.

Just load one and use the one. AVG is much less of a resource hog so would be my choice.

However running Zonealarm on both is a good idea.
