Hi all,

I have a CAT6 wired network at home and I have a PC and laptop. My PC uses Win XP and my laptop uses Vista home. My PC uses a A7N8X E Deluxe motherboard with gigabit lan and my laptop uses 10/100 ethernet port. I get about 2.5 megs download speed from my PC and 13 megs from my laptop, I use Speedtest.net to test speed and have used same CAT6 outlet and cable to test both machines. Please can anyone shed some light on this, I even bought a seperate PCI lan card with 10/100/1000 capabilities on the PC but made no difference.

Many thanks for any replies

See if this help

Lets start with the basic

Most modem/router will only transfer data at 10/100Mbps have not found one that will transfer at 1000Mbps as yet

If you have a 10/100/1000Mbps LAN card the speed between the router and the computer will automatically adjust down to 100Mbps but the card will keeping searching for a 1000Mbps connection, which slows down the download speed

It would be better if you change the transfer rate on the 10/100/1000Mbps LAN card from Auto to 100Mbps full duplex

Across a local network PC-to-PC if all the PC have a 10/100/1000Mbps lan cards the transfer rate would be 1000Mbps, only if all the conditions is correct, if not the transfer rate will automatic downgrade back to 100Mbps

How to change Lan Card Speed

Right click on Local Area Connection Display Icon on task bar

Click Status-General-Properties

At the top of display the type of Lan card will be displayed

Click Configure-Click-Advanced Tab

Click- Connection Type-Change to 100Mbps full duplex

Click-Power Management Tab

Untick if selected "Allow Computer to turn this device off to save power

Try tweaking the network card settings using TCP Optimizer click here Set the slider to your connection speed, choose the network adapter from the drop down list then hit Optimal settings.
