To turn off or not to turn off? that's my question

Hi folks,

Just a simple one really, I was told a few years ago that computer operating systems are designed to run continously, and that all the turning off, turning back on helps unstabalize it. As a consequence i leave mine on all the time and have various things e.g. virus update and NU scheduled to run at periodic times.

Should I really turn the thing off when i'm not using it?

Any opinions / knowledge would be good

This has been discussed many times, and almost everyone has an opinion about it. One of my friends leaves his on all the time and has done so for years but personally I prefer to switch off if I don't think it will be in use for some time. His point was that the most stressful times for any electronic device was startup and shutdown, therefore he believed that leaving it on would cause less wear and tear to his system.
Is it better to leave your computer on?
Haven't a clue. But I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions.
