I am trying to play a dvd and it keeps saying on the screen- Your machine is not compatible with the current dvd region. Has anyone any idea what this means?

DVD's are categorised into different regions.

We the UK are Region two (2).

Now the DVD you are trying to play maybe a region 1, 3, 4 etc. So thats why the message pops up.

Your DVD drive has been set to allow playback of other Region disc, so when it sees the Region 2 disc it says no can play and pops up the message.

Thanks Powerless
So how do i sort it out?

In windows XP > Start > Control panel > System > Hardware > Device manager > Right click your DVD drive. Select the DVD Region tab (if it's there) Modify the region to the region of the disc if you know it.

Windows 98+ In the control panel just select system then right click your DVD drive.

OR click here and it will help hopefully...

You could even try playing the DVD with another player click here (its free)

There are software solutions to some of the problems associated with playing (for example region 1 US dvds), but you also have to install region free firmware into your dvd rom which could ruin it.

Instead if you have a spare ide channel connection , fit a second dvd rom and use that as region 1.

Then download "Dvd Genie".

The problem with altering Xp,s region setting is that after 4/5 changes, the software player and also your dvd rom will be permanently locked to the last region played.

Dvd Genie will reset the player but you still have to flash the dvd roms firmware.....risky.
