Try to log in but reverts to 'saving settings'

I seem to be having a few problems today.

I rebooted my PC and when I entered the room the Windows log in screen was showing which it never normally does. It normally goes straight to the desktop for all users. When I click on the log in icon, however, for a split second it shows 'loading setting' then changes to 'saving settings'. I can't get the desktop to load.

I've phoned my PC support who have told me that it is a virus and I need to reinstall Windows which I don't want to do in haste. I've tried system restore via safe mode to no avail. I've tried last known good config also to no avail. I can get it to load in safe mode but don't really know what else to try. Any ideas please?

So are you saying that you are in a login-logout loop? If so click here and scroll down to 'Here is the solution to the logon - logoff issue in Windows XP.'

I haven't got a Windows disc merely a Compaq recovery disc. Can I use this?

Unfortunately no. I think you are stuck with a recovery.
