When my son turns on his (6 year old)PC he gets the message "Operating system cannot be found". Any suggestions ?

Don't panic quite yet, but try this if you feel comfortable opening the PC. Open it up, and check the ribbon cables to the hard drive. Check that the connections are solid at both ends,by pushing them firmly. Then try booting the PC again. Good luck!

Get a boot disk from click here and run scandisk from it; if that does not find a problem it may be necessary to format the hdd and install the OS again.

Also try this from the boot disk:

fdisk /mbr

this will fix the master boot record.
