Trouble connecting to your Netgear w'less router?

  monkeyboy21 09:37 04 Nov 2009

Since having Virgin broadband installed I have had intermittent problems with my Laptop connecting to my router, a problem i posted back awhile on. My laptop would see the network, but would have trouble connecting to it.

Recently i've been advised of a fix which seems to have cured the problem. Most netgear routers are set to channel 6 straight out of the box. This is all great unless other households are using the same wireless router. They appear to conflict with each other stopping a connection from happening. If you change the settings in the router setup to an alternative channel ( i was advised 13) this should prevent the problem.

It seems to have saved me a lot of frustration so far, and one that all te technical help desks never seem to advise on!

Just a point for anyone else who might read your advice...

In some countries (but not the UK) the use of channel numbers above "11" is not legal and, for that reason, many Wireless Network Adapters are designed not to connect on channels 12 & 13.
