Transferring from wireless to ethernet connection

I am currently connecting to the Internet using a BT600 wireless dongle and BT Homehub 4. I now want to connect using an ethernet cable between computer and router. I have tried disconnecting the dongle and then connecting via a cable originally supplied by BT. However, all I get is a message telling me that there is no Internet connection. What do I have to do to use the cable instead of the wireless dongle?

Suggestions/solutions welcomed!

As Jock1e says, but don't rule out a dodgy cable or connector, try another if you have one.

Tried both suggestions but neither worked. Message was a straight "no connections available". Have checked the driver which appears to be up to date. Plugged the dongle in and all back to normal. One other message "local area connection appears to have a problem". Windows doesn't appear to have an answer for that!

Have you run the troubleshooter ?
