Transfer OE and O email to Vista

  wotbus@ 11:19 22 Nov 2008

Old PC = XP Pro with Office Pro and 2 current email managers, Outlook Express and Outlook.
The task = to transfer email to new Vista PC without Office and therefore without Outlook.
The OE looks relatively straightforward but how do you work around the Outlook situation.
Is there a similar program in the OpenOffice suite?
Could I install Thunderbird on the Vista then import the Outlook stuff somehow?
Any thoughts and advice would be welcome on this dull, wet weekend :-)

What about this:
I install the free 60 day trial of Office on the Vista PC.
Transfer Outlook to Outlook.
Install Thunderbird.
Transfer Outlook to Thunderbird.
Bin the Office trial after 60 days? ;-)

XP computer:
In Outlook Express, import messages/contacts from Outlook.
Now export a copy the Outlook folder containing the .dbx files to Desktop. Export also the .wab contact files.
Copy from Desktop to USB key and transfer to Vista computer.
Vista computer:
Open Vista Mail and import the data from the key.
Some folders had to be re-arranged but all the data was transferred.
